Twirling on the square |
They rose as one man to revenge their brethren's
Blood and at the point of the sword to assert &
Defend their native Rights.
They nobly dar'd to be free!!
Two exclamation points!! I'm sure in today's era it would be regarded as overly dramatic, but I believe a lack of passion is the greatest absence from modern politics.
For those of you (much like me) who need a brush-up history lesson, the basic events of the battles at Lexington and Concord began with the British army being ordered to take Colonial militia supplies stored in Concord. Paul Revere and others warned Lexington, on their famous "Midnight Ride," of the upcoming battle the next day. The first shots were fired at dawn on the Lexington Battle Green, and then the battle moved on to Concord, where the Colonial militiamen pushed the British army back to Boston.
On the drive from Lexington to Concord down the Battle Road, there are many historic landmarks. My favorite is the Minute Man National Historical Park, where you can see sites of some of the Midnight Riders' homes, the North Bridge, and the Battle Road Trail. I recommend the quaint Liberty Ride, a guided trolly tour along Battle Road complete with a knowledgeable volunteer dressed in period garb. A piece of history is at your feet, and all around you are lush New England woods. My idea of paradise.

I love this post! It makes me want to come and visit! (I'm sure that was the outcome you wanted, right?) What I love about the city I currently live.....hmm...I love that it is so easy to travel to many places! Want to visit Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Philippines, Cambodia? Sure, all within three hours! I also like that we live in a truly international environment. Kids with parents of a different race or ethnic background are such the norm here in our little community that it doesn't even register anymore. Love that. Things that drive me crazy about living here....oh wait, that's another post. :)
Have you done the Freedom Trail in Boston yet? If you haven't, your children will if you're around long enough for grade-school immersion. Nearly every field trip is a historical field trip for the Boston schoolchild!
Yes, come visit! I love that you are traveling while you're there. I can't wait to talk to you more when you're home. Bring pictures.
No! Dad and I wanted to do it this weekend, but it was so chilly, so we did Stone Zoo instead. I can't imagine a better education for the girls than an immersion in historical places. Cool!
I used to live in Waltham and going to Lexington was a fun thing to do. My husband and I really liked the movie theater there (before kids).
I am interested in history too. Last year we read some children's books about the Rev war but I'm a afraid I've forgotten so much again already!
Really love the tree pics!
